Writing week 6

This week Year 1 have been writing steps on how to do something. Mrs Smith and Miss Marks needed to write down how to make a slice for their family members. Year 1 helped them to write the steps, thinking about a verb to start each step and the structure of a recipe.

Students thought about something that they knew how to make or do and wrote clear steps in order for someone to follow them.

Below are some examples of the slice recipe and steps as well as some examples of some students writing so far.

Year 1 followed the recipe steps today and made the delicious slices in class. They were very yummy!

Maths Week 6

This week, year 1 have been identifying 3D objects in our classroom and describing their features. They also estimated the length of their object and started to measure using formal units.

Today for National Numeracy Day, we took our maths task outside. We identified 3D objects in the playground, recorded their features and estimated their length.
Please see the Numeracy Newsletter you all received today for more maths news and resources. You can also follow the link on the newsletter to view the fantastic 'Mathy' song that year 5 produced along with four Year 6 students who wrote it.

Maths Week 5

Positional Language

This week Year 1 have been describing where objects and people are in relation to other objects using a range of positional words. Below are some words that we have been using and how some can be used in sentences.

Play 'I Spy' with someone at home using the positional language above for the clues. "I spy with my little eye something that is next to the fridge and below the cupboard."

Writing Week 5

We have continued our imaginative stories about the mystery box or object this week and concentrating on synonyms to make them sound more interesting. We have also learnt about paragraphs and have tried to use them in our writing!

Below are the beginning of some of our imaginative stories. We hope they create a visual image or movie in your mind!

Maths Week 4

2D Shapes

This week we have been learning about 2-Dimensional shapes and our task was to design our own flag using at least 3 different 2-D shapes. We then had to describe what our flag looked like. We can name 2D shapes, the number of sides and vertices and even talk about the lines within the shapes as being horizontal, vertical, diagonal or parallel.

Can you make a secret picture using some 2D shapes. Describe your picture to a family member and see if they can draw your picture without seeing it!
You can also play Who Am I? with a family member to see if they can guess the 2D shape you are trying to describe.
